“Villains are always more interesting than heroes”
How far would you agree with this point of view as it relates to the plot of “Much Ado About Nothing”? ... I accept that there are interesting elements to some heroes however, I find the most interesting, and often complex, characters within any story are the villains. One reason for this statement is the fact that villains increasingly intrigue us as we anxiously await their downfall throughout story plots. For example, throughout Much Ado we are constantly wondering when, or indeed if, the heroes such as Claudio will discover the true nature of Don Jon.
There are those who argue that villains are just an annoyance that can sometimes cause too many problems and possibly ruin the ‘appropriate happy ending’. ... Were it not for the presence of villains within story plots, there is the potential for a story to become bland and uninteresting. To prove just how important villains are to a story plot we could study the basic structure of many stories. Were we to do that, we would find that stories are based around how heroes overcome the obstacles that the villains place within the plot. Consequently, were we to remove villains, there would possibly be no story to begin with, and even if there were, it would be boring due to the fact that everything would go virtually perfectly.
