American History X

American History X is about a brutal look at racial hatred in our modern world today. The film features a neo-Nazi skinhead, Derek Vinyard, who rages for retribution over the murder of his father, who was a firefighter. His father was viciously killed by a black guy, which is the root to all of Derek’s hatred and racism he expresses throughout the movie. When Derek murders two black men trying to break into his vehicle, he is sent to prison, where he totally transforms his self-image and leaves a changed man. When he is released from prison he attempts to rescue his younger brother, Danny, who is currently following down the same fateful path Derek went down. I believe that the movie was missing some very important pieces or issues that should have, in my opinion, been incorporated in. One of the most vital issues that this movie misses is black family interaction. Throughout the film it shows the white family’s (Vinyard) perspective of everything that is taking place, but you never get to really see the black families reactions or emotions. Another important aspect that the movie misses is white people actually standing up against racism in their community. The entire movie just really shows that white people are racist, which by no means is true. One of the mysteries that the film leaves you with is why the black kid actually shot Danny in the school bathroom. There were a few mishaps between the two kids, but nothing significant enough to lead to death. Another item that kind of baffled me, was after Danny got shot to death, the movie merely ends right there. You don’t get to see the family’s or friends reactions to this unfortunate death, besides his older brother Derek, who runs into the bathroom and is mortified by the sight of Danny dead.
