BACK ORIFICE 2000&SUBSEVEN

Abstract What may be a safe e-mail or a harmless software that has been downloaded can in actuality be a Trojan horse program, and when activated, it can attack programs within a system or take control of a system without the knowledge of the person or organization. INTRODUCTION: A Trojan horse is defined as a "malicious, security-breaking program that is disguised as something benign", such as a screen saver, a game, or some other seemingly less harmful program (Lo 2003). For example, you may download what appears to be a movie or music file, but when you click on it, you release a dangerous program(s) that can erase your disk, send your credit card numbers and passwords to another computer, or let an attacker hijack your computer to commit illegal denial of service attacks (Lo 2003). Trojan horses are executable programs, which means that when you open the file, it will run and perform some action(s). In Windows, executable programs have file extensions like "exe," "vbs," "com," "bat," "pif," "scr," "lnk," or "js." (Lo 2003). A Trojan horse installed in a computer can provide an entry point that allows a hacker and/or attacker do things such as: · Get login passwords. · Alter account passwords to make the victim get locked out from his or her files. · Provide key logging, so the hacker can see everything the victims enters on his or her keyboard to get credit card information, etc. · Get access to all files on the victim’s computer. · Get access to the web camera on the victim’s computer. WHAT ARE TROJAN HORSE PROGRAMS? The Trojan horse got its name from the old mythical story about how the Greeks gave their enemy a huge wooden horse as a gift during the war. The enemy accepted this gift and they brought it into their kingdom, and during the night, Greek soldiers sneaked out of the horse and attacked the city (Danchev 2002). In respect to computers, a Trojan horse is a way of entering a victim’s computer undetected and having access to any data stored on the user's hard disk drive whenever he or she goes online.
