UPS vs. FedEx: Ground Wars
FedEx and UPS are the two largest package shipping in the United States. FedEx primary business is overnight air delivery by airplanes. UPS primary business is on-ground delivery. The main strategic issues in this case is that FedEx keeps losing ground in the battle for both air and ground delivery both in the US and abroad. On the other hand, UPS initially started as a ground base delivery system has been trying to decade to gain and inroad into the air travel business that has been controlled by FedEx.
In 1992, FedEx was given a contract by Phillips to construct a warehouse distribution center in Singapore. FedEx was unable to and “dropped the ball” on the project forcing the chipmaker to ship everything the most expensive way, even if the shipment did not require that kind of speed.
