Emily Dickinson was born, raised and spent the great majority of her life in Amherst, Massachusetts, she died in the house in which she was born and left the small community only a handful of times in her entire life. ... In this mid-nineteenth century, patriarchal society the male was a formidable and dominant character and as a consequence of the culture in which she lived, life was hard for a female, especially a female poet and was obviously a significant issue for Emily as it is reflected upon in her poetry, with her chief source of imagery being her world of everyday experience.
Intellectuals have debated over the meaning of, ‘My Life has stood-a Loaded Gun-‘ (poem 754) with some arguing that it is a poem stating the limitations of mortal love and a yearning for the concept of immortality, however the fact that it was published after her death means that it is open to interpretation.
