After studying Nathaniel Hawthornes, The Scarlet Letter, it is apparent that of the three major characters, Chillingworth is the most to blame for the outcome of the story because he left Hester to be sent over to a new world by herself, he tortures Dimmesdale for 7 yrs, and then he follows Hester and Pearl back to England. Each of these factors, in some way, caused harm to others and contributed to the tragic conclusion. Chillingworth is most responsible for the unfortunate ending of the novel because after he had married Hester they were to come over to America, he sent her and he was to come on a later ship. But in the meantime he never showed up until years later. So Hester carried on with her life and fell in love with someone else. Had he came at the same time this would not have happened. Even though Chillingworth was captured by Indians and not released for some time Hester could not put her life on hold for someone that was so much older and ugly.
