Quentin Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction is very interesting and many critics may argue that it is an example of postmodernist cinema. ... Critics may put Pulp Fiction into the postmodernist idea, but that’s what they seem to get out when they look at it from that perspective. Despite the fact that postmodernism uses concepts such as intertexuality, reflexivity, and more, I feel there are certain aspects that counteract this to make Pulp Fiction not be seen as a postmodern film.
Absence of history in Pulp Fiction is a concept correlated with the idea of postmodernism. ... If a movie has a vintage scene, like Pulp Fiction, it doesn’t make it postmodern, because every movie that contains a piece from an older generation would make it postmodern, which is not the case, if you look at it in this aspect. ... For instance, we see John Travolta being compared to the character he played in Saturday Night Fever to prove Pulp Fiction is postmodern. ... We see Travolta showing how he dances in Pulp Fiction and quite frankly, one could say that this correlates with the role he played in Grease. ...
As a result of looking at arguments for postmodernism I feel that Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction can also be seen as not being an example of postmodernist cinema.
