While a short story is very similar to all of these there are certain points which set the genre short story apart. Parables differ from short stories in that they illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, a novel, likewise, is a long work which usually covers a long period of time, and an anecdotal story differs in that the related happening in the story is the center of interest.
A short story is like a parable in that it “has a point, a meaning” (351). But there are multiple characters and other things which influence the twists and turns of the story, such as the setting of “the doctor’s waiting room… [and the] pig parlor” (296,308). ... This is made so that the moral of the story will come easily and the reader will be able to better decipher the intended lesson. The setting of a short story is essential as well as necessary.
