“Eco Challenge”, a documentary screened on The Discovery Channel is a reality-type television show, which follows the lives of many teams of different nationalities as they travel through Patagonia, Argentina, on a 12-day expedition. The purpose of the show is to both entertain and inform the audience, whilst enticing them to continue watching for the rest of the season. The composers of the programme have implemented many techniques to create meaning, including the use of interviews, dramatisation and audience observation. The introduction of every new episode is very important in setting the meaning. The opening visual shots are of the contestants travelling through many divers areas of Patagonia, with extremities of climate and surface varied. These include shots of contestants swimming through rivers, trekking on snow-covered mountaintops and riding on horse back through fields or grass. To exaggerate these shots even further, colour is manipulated to show the whole spectrum and create greater contrasts. The camera shots used are quite necessary in creating meaning with the frequent use of zoom, panning and high shots. Using a zoom shot gives the viewers a perspective of the size of the surrounding landscape, and the geographic location of the team in focus. A shot that involves panning is used to emphasize speed or danger and high shots belittle the contestants in their surroundings. Also the use of the extreme-long shot is quite common to identify distance and highlight the size of the contestant compared to their environment.
