Ferguson begins chapter one by explaining the drastic changes Zambia experienced within the last century. Prior to the 1960’s, Zambia was a third world country with no actual experience of what it meant to be modernized. In the mid sixties Zambia had achieved their goal of industrialization. The thriving copper industry of Zambia seemed to be their ticket to the modern world. From the mid sixties up until around 1979, Zambia was considered a middle income country. Since 1979, their economic stability has continued to deteriorate for various reasons.
