Fair Is Fair Every day millions of women are faced with the challenges of being single mothers. More often than not, the fathers are completely out of the picture both emotionally and financially. In Katha Pollitt’s essay “It Takes Two: A Modest Proposal for Holding Fathers Equally Accountable” many interesting suggestions are made and, although I agree with some, she does have a few extreme views (152-154). Ideally, men should be held responsible for their actions even if they claim that these actions are simple mistakes. An eighteen-year-old girl tells her boyfriend that she’s pregnant only for her boyfriend to break-up with her. The way it stands in most cases, she will be left to provide financially for both herself and her child without any help from the baby’s father. In a situation like this, it is in the best interest of the child if the father is a part of their life, whether it is by visiting and knowing the child or by simply paying child support. As this essay points out, having the child’s father around can boost test scores and improve the child’s emotional well being. According to Pollitt, 50% of welfare mothers are in the government program because of a divorce where either the judge didn’t award child support or the father has avoided paying the child support. If a mother left her baby in a gas station bathroom, the story would be front page news and the mother would be charged with child abandonment and/or child endangerment.
