White Oleander White Oleander was a based on the novel by Janet Fitch. White Oleander is based upon the trials and tribulations of one teenage girl, Astrid, who learns and discovers life from many different angles and perspectives. The novel also focuses on Ingrid, Astrid’s mother, and several of the foster homes that Astrid comes in contact with. It is a story based upon self-discovery, relationships, taking control of one’s own life, and the pursuit for love and acceptance. It is a “growing up” tale, which Fitch describes in immensely her novel. Fitch uses many colors, vibrant characters, and scenes that paint pictures, without even seeing the film. The film; however, chooses specific foster homes, lighting, focuses, and camera angles that are very much appealing and give the film the right edge. There are several details in the book that the film failed to establish; however, I feel that the movie did do the novel justice. The film finished up with and up-side to the story and a glimpse of hope, whereas the novel ended pretty grimly.
