Acting and Directing
Introduction
John Wolfgang was so close to the truth when he said, “thinking is easy, acting is difficult”. Yet, for some, acting comes very easy, for instance, when I was about twelve or thirteen, my mother would always comment that I was always “acting.” “Quit acting” was a command she would often make to me when I would be describing to her details of what happened between my brother and I or I would be trying to convince her that we did not do the awful deed that we were accused of. ... Standing in front of the mirror and acting like my favorite actress, Sabrina in Bewitched, was one of my favorite pass times. ...
Fortunate for the audience or unfortunate for me, acting did not turn out to be as easy as it seemed. Of course, acting in front of my mother’s dressing mirror was indeed fun and easy, but I later found out that I was not cut out to be an actress.
Acting and directing
In my experience with acting and directing, I found that commitment, persistence, imagination, organization, and practice are essential if you want to be successful in entertaining the audience. I also came to a realization when through my experience with acting and directing, that I did not possess the creativity and other attributes necessary to be successful as an actress. ...
I also learned that in acting, an actor or actress should know not only his or her lines, but also the lines of others because being on cue plays a vital part in a play. ... Initially, I could not visualize how acting or directing could be used in my life. After pondering and almost giving up the thought that there could be some correlation between my life and the arts, I realized that acting is a part of my life, and as William Shakespeare put it, “all the world is a stage” and “all the men and women merely players. ...
Concrete experience
I had another opportunity to participate in a play; however, this time I not only had a small part in the play, I assisted with directing the play. Of the two positions I held in this play, directing was more challenging than acting. ... I assisted with choreographing the dance routine that was at the end of the play as well as assisted with directing the play. ...
Directing the Easter play was not an easy task to say the least. ... In my experience with directing, I learned that planning is just as important in life as it is in directing a play. ... I use the time management skills that I have learned throughout my lifetime in directing the play and in directing my life. ... Acting is not easy. ... I found that inadequate practicing births inadequate acting, especially for the rookie actress. Oscar Wilde was quoted saying, “I love acting. ... ” There is so much more to acting than just reading the script. ... In comparing the Odd Couple play with the Easter play, I feel that our instructor’s way of directing was better because it allowed us to be creative.
One of the most important things that I obtained from my experience in acting and directing is that bringing your own individuality and creativity to the set is one of the most valuable assets an actor can offer.
