... Little Red Riding Hood is a folktale that comes in many different versions that have been passed down for centuries. ... Both similarities and differences appear throughout the plots and themes of these two variations of Little Red Riding Hood.
In the Grimm brother’s “Little Red-Cap” and John B. Gruelle’s All About Little Red Riding Hood, each plot follows the same basic storyline while certain details are changed to create specific circumstances in the folktale. In “Little Red-Cap,” a young, “naïve girl” wears a red velvet cap all the time and is thus called little red-cap (Geary). When little red-cap goes to visit her grandmother, she crosses through a forest where she encounters a “nefarious wolf” (Geary). ... While little red-cap is playing, the wolf runs ahead to her grandmother’s house where he proceeds to “[devour] her” completely. He then disguises himself in grandmother’s clothes and waits for little red-cap to come to the house (Grimm). After some time, little red-cap comes to her grandmother’s house where the wolf also swallows her in order to satisfy his hunger, and then he takes a nap. ... The hunter then “cuts them out of the wolf’s belly,” and “Red and Granny are rescued” (Gunning).
