In the second chapter of the Second Book of Kings Elijah, Israel’s greatest prophet, hands over his mission to his close companion and follower, Elisha. The spirit and the mission of Elijah were then passed on to Elisha as Elijah was escorted from the earth to heaven by a fiery chariot. Elijah’s body was never found. This famous biblical event set in motion a new belief that Elijah would later return to announce the coming of the Messiah. ...
In 2 Kings 2: 9 Elijah and Elisha are carrying on a dialogue about Elijah leaving his earthly life just as they cross the Jordan River. Elijah asked Elisha if he has any last requests; anything that he wants from Elijah before he leaves and passes on his duties to Elisha. Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. ... He asked this because he wanted to be treated as Elijah’s first son.
Your spirit refers to Elijah’s connection to YHWH. The source of Elijah’s spirit is YHWH, it is not some inherent or a personal quality possessed by Elijah. Elijah shares in common with Moses a special relationship with YHWH.
Elijah was much like Moses in several other respects. The description of the of the progression Elisha to Elijah’s position as the prophetic leader of Israel is much like the case of Moses delegating Joshua as the new head of Israel and his entrance into the Promised Land.
