I am comparing the two portrayals of two old women Mrs Rutter from The Darkness Out

I am comparing the two portrayals of two old women Mrs Rutter from The Darkness Out There by Penelope Lively and Mrs Chundle from Old Mrs Chundle by Thomas Hardy.
Darkness out There is about two young people, Kerry and Sandra, who embarked in doing community service. They have stereotypical views about old people, which are later dispelled in an unexpected revelation.
Old Mrs Chundle on the other hand is about a curate who takes Mrs Chundle under his wing, she then ceases to be respectable in his eyes and he abandons her and then, when she dies suddenly, he feels guilty about his course of action.
First impressions of Mrs Rutter were that she was a dear old lady, this is before I meet her as Pat describes her as ‘a dear old thing all on her own.’ This made me think that Mrs Rutter would love company as it made her sound lonely. ... It made me question whether Mrs Rutter liked company because she likes to dominate people. I get this from the descriptions of ‘Packers End’, the field leading towards Mrs Rutters cottage sounds dark and sinister, ‘the police hunt’ headline, the German war plane crew killed and ‘witches and wolves and tigers’ which I think gives a clue to what Mrs Rutter is really like.
Similarly with Mrs Chundle, we meet her straight away and Hardy describes her as ‘sour’ faced. This made me explore the ideas that Mrs Chundle was either miserable or upset at the curate’s actions. ...
Even though Old Mrs Chundle is a pre 19th Century text, I think Pat from Darkness Out There and the curate in Old Mrs Chundle both feel it is there duty to make sure the old people are looked after or taken care of. ... I believe this is because he doesn’t want to look like he’s been made a fool of to the rector, so which is why he tries Mrs Chundle to go to church.
