Oedipus the King: Blindness
The pre-determined fate of Lauis’ future resulted in an unfortunate beginning for Oedipus. Being disowned by his own father, Oedipus (swollen foot) grew up with Polybus and Merope not knowing that they were not his real parents. Fleeing Corinth to avoid Polybus and Merope, Oedipus would avoid his predicted future-killing his father and marrying his mother. However, being crowned king of Thebes by answering the Sphinx’s riddle led to unexpected surprises. His endless effort to cast out the “pollution” in his land resulted into many problems for Oedipus. Many people tried to help Oedipus find this “pollution,” but his stubbornness led to his denial of the truth and his own blindness. Through the wrongful accusations made by Oedipus towards Teiresias and Creon and the story and the suicide of Jocasta, Oedipus shows the motif of blindness which expresses the themes, the symbols and the plot of the story.
