"Be Skinny," Society Says So
For as long as I can remember, the term "skinny" has been around. I have
grown up believing that skinny is the unquestionable way to be in life.
Friends, family, and especially society continually emphasize the importance
of the word skinny. Skinny is a priority, is a goal, is happiness. Being
skinny is so important that you must do everything in your power to stay
skinny. ... Skinny!
Skinny! Skinny!
But, when did "skinny" develop such a positive connotation? The true
definition of skinny does not even exist in our lives. Half of us dont have
the slightest idea as to what being skinny really means. In fact, I can
guarantee that not even you know what it really is to be skinny.
After looking up the term in Merriam Webster, I came across the original, now
meaniningless definition of skinny -"lacking sufficient flesh, emaciated,
lacking usual or desirable qualities, quantities or significance. ... In fact,
the definition goes as far as saying being skinny "lacks desirable
qualities." I find it almost funny that we now consider skinny to mean the
exact opposite of this dictionary definition.
