Three years ago, I had a conversation that deeply moved me. One of my teachers had given me back an essay with a note to see him after class. He pulled me aside and said, “I gave you a B mark because that is what this work deserves. However, this essay is deeply disappointing to me. I expect you to use your power as a student to produce better work in the future.” After walking away very frustrated and angry, I was determined to make a difference. In order to prove to my teacher that I could do better, I rewrote the essay and turned it back into him for no extra credit. I had come to realize that good work for any activity is not enough; I have come to expect no less than the best from myself.
