Essay: Away
For the characters of “Away” a holiday can be seen as a journey of reconciliation, healing and self-knowledge. Coral heals during the play, which is then the foundation of reconciliation with Roy. Gwen finds self-knowledge and reconciliation occurs between Gwen and Jim. Vic and Harry go through a healing stage of coping with the fact that their son, Tom, is very sick and may die. ... This causes a deterioration in the relationship and Coral runs away. When Coral is away she finds herself at a beach with the rest of the characters. ... This has many meanings for Coral as it is a healing process for her. This is the time when Coral and Roy using shells as a symbol experience reconciliation. ... Jim, a calm and collected man, becomes very worried when Gwen goes into a state of panicking or a ‘bex mood’, Jim tries to calm her down which shows that he is the more mature in the relationship. ... When the characters meet on the beach, Vic takes Gwen away from the scene between Jim and Harry and explains to her the situation that has happened with Tom and his sickness.
