The Ontario Curriculum document for kindergarten outlines overall and specific expectations for the end of the school year. How does a teacher move their class to the point where the children have met these expectations by June? This month I'd like to look at Language Arts and Mathematics and how the provincial expectations are met in the classroom. Language Arts In Language Arts, the overall expectations for the end of June are "to communicate effectively by listening and speaking, to understand a variety of written materials that are read to them (e.g. stories, poems, informational materials); to make sense of simple written materials (e.g. familiar words, signs, labels) using reading strategies that are appropriate for beginners; to communicate thoughts and feelings using writing strategies that are appropriate for beginners; and to use and respond to a variety of media materials." By the end of September, I have a good sense of where each child is in terms of many of the Language Arts expectations.
