The legal system towards the blacks during the 1950’s and 1960’s was, in a few words, corrupt and unjust. A black man had better odds of winning the lottery than to win a court case in the South during these years. Many obstacles had to be hurdled in order for an African American to even have a fair trial. During the 1960’s in the South, whites were considered to be socially better than black people. If a black person were to be tried against a white person, it would be almost imperative that the white person win because if the black person won, he’d seem to disrupt the social status of blacks which at that time was below whites. It was very common for a black person to be in a court at the mercy of a white judge and an all white, racist jury.
