various english stories with analysis

I think the effect that Poe was trying to convey was one of subterfuge. The entire short story begins by Montresor using a very passive method of persuasion to convince Fortunato to evaluate his Amontillado. This deception is especially seen in the dialogue between Montresor and Fortunato. Montresor on several occasions insists that Fortunato turn back because of a hoarse cough, not to exacerbate it. Montresor used this form of manipulation, rather a reverse psychology if you will, to deceive Fortunato. This effect of deception allows Montresor to ultimately get his revenge. Young Goodman Brown’s punishment for entering into the forest that night was knowledge. Everything can sometimes be related to that old adage “ignorance is bliss.” Goodman Brown found this out. This short story was one of a very true nature. In many cases in life do we find that people have two different lifestyles: public and private. Sometimes what people do in private would be appalling to the public.
