Birth of Special Effects in Film

... The greatest entertainment we have today is in the film industry. ... “In 1902 George Melies made the film, A Trip to the Moon” (Toulet 69). He was one of the first directors to have stunned the audiences with his special effects in the movie.
In films today, directors are able to use computer generated special effects that are so fantastic it is hard for the viewer to recognize that what they are seeing is not real. Special effects are defined as: “Techniques employed to make the staged events of a movie seem real”(Netzley). There are also many different types of special effects. One is called visual effects: “Manipulations of the visual images of a movie, either in camera during photography or using the films negative during post production” (Netzley V). Another form of special effects is the mechanical effects. These special effects consist of any mechanism built and used on a stage to fool the viewer.

The last form of special effects is makeup and costume. ... “The beginning of the story of special effects is to be found at the beginning of the film industry itself” (Brosnan 15). Even though Melies did not have computers for his special effects, he was able to entertain a great many viewers with his twenty one minute film by using his, at the time, ‘state of the art’ special effects. ... This movie was a breakthrough film for Melies. There were many aspects of this particular film that differed from other films already produced. One difference that was easily recognized was the film’s length. ... Melies was the first person to ever use ’stop action’ on film.
The discovery of this amazing special effect referred to as ‘stop action’ was discovered by accident when in the middle of filming Melies’ camera jammed.
