In Germany, Adolph Hitler was coming to power during the 1930’s. When the Great Depression hit in 1929, Hitler explained it as a Jewish-Communist plot, and it was widely accepted by many Germans. Since he promised a strong Germany, jobs, and national glory he had many votes. Nazi representation in the Reichstag grew from 12 seats in 1928 to 107 in 1930. The Nazi party kept growing from increasing number of unemployed and fear of Communism. In 1933, Hitler was appointed chancellor. Once in power, he quickly became dictator. Anything that was not Nazi controlled was against the law. Thousands of anti-Nazi people were sent to concentration camps. Hitler intimidated his opponents by the Gestapo, his secret police. He somehow built support from the German people to take rule over Europe. Hitler was very racist, and made a “superior” race. Persecution against the Jews continued and worsened. During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Hitler supported Nationalist leader Francisco Franco, supplying him airplanes and weapons. This gave Hitler a chance to test his strategies and weapon technology. In 1938 Germany took over Austria. In September 1938, France and Britain feared the outbreak of war, so they signed the Munich Pact, which gave Germany Sudetenland as long as Germany left the rest of Czechoslovakia alone. But by March of 1939, Germany had total control of Czechoslovakia. Hitler was preparing for an aggressive move towards the east. In August 1939, Germany signed a nonaggression pact with the USSR. This pact secretly divided Poland. Because of the Stock Market Crash in 1929, America was in the Great Depression during the 1930’s. People couldn’t afford to adorn themselves with fine clothing or as many clothing as they could only years ago. Clothes were kept simple. They were droopy and straight cut. Not much jewelry was worn as in previous decades, but no one really cared or focused on fickle things such as clothes or jewelry.
