INTRODUCTION First I will describe the current situation the company is facing then I will identify the main ethical issue. Next I will state the complaints that Ruth has and analyze their merit. Following a declaration of two key defining moments I will offer my conclusions and then my recommendations to help the company resolve the situation. ANALYSIS SITUATION DESCRIPTION: Ruth Linskey, the sales manager at Triton, has just been passed over for the new marketing position that was given to Dick Simon. She confronted Barbara, the Human resources director, this morning threatening to file suit against the company for sexual harassment and discrimination. Ruth cited Steve Baines, the VP of manufacturing, as writing her a letter of recommendation for the new position and she also reveled that her and Steve once had a brief affair. Barbara met with Ed Coulter, the VP of marketing, and George Drake, the CEO of Triton, to discuss the situation and decide what they should do in the remaining twenty-one hours that Ruth has given them before taking action. ID OF ETHICAL ISSUE: The problem that Triton faces is whether or not their current system and culture foster and condone sexual harassment and discrimination. Where do they cross the line of truthfully rationalizing their practices versus trying to hide, either consciously or unconsciously, their ethical misconduct? If Ruth were not promoted on the sole reason that Ed does not think women are to be trusted in higher positions, then he would be trying to hide his ethical wrongdoings, but if his reasoning is correct and indeed Dick is more qualified, then Ruth would just be acting bitter about not getting the promotion. COMPLAINTS: In her meeting with Barbara this morning, Ruth gave some evidence, though it is quite vague, to back up her lawsuit.
