Congress passed the Federal Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act ("E-Sign") in June 2000. E-Sign is a federal law validating the use of electronic signatures, electronic records and electronic agents. Under E-Sign, an electronic signature is defined as "an electronic sound, symbol or process attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record", such as clicking an "I Accept" button.
