6 Environments of Impact 1. Natural environment: effects clothing for physical protection from elements. (sun, rain, snow) Materials available to meet those needs during the time period 2. Political environment: sumptuary laws…laws that regulate clothing consumption. WWII regulated nylon, you could only have so many yards of fabric per dress. Regulations on type of fur depending on social class. Gothic Period regulated the length of the toe of the shoe. During wars the dress tends to reflect uniforms of war. (cookie dough fabric during Desert storm. Wars bring about contact with different people and different materials. There are laws that regulate trade. Now trade has decreased with France. Maintenance of transportation routs too with roads being bad due to violence. There are also international political situations like free Tibet shirts and Dali Lamma shirts. 3. Economic environment: what things cost and what quality of good you get and kind of and amount of clothing you’re allowed to buy. i.e. slave vs. plantation owners. There was a bigger difference before the 1900’s this is impacted by international trade. The more you trade, the more stuff comes in. 4. Knowledge and Technological environment: More familiar you are with what is available the more you can do. Awareness of styles of other places and times. Elements of these come back 5. Social Environment: based on how segmented your society is. Age is an example. But it is not a huge factor now. Gender is another. This is not segmented as much now especially for girls,. Lineage is another. Indians wear beading and turquoise. Scotts wear plaid. Race is another. (Negroid, Asian, Caucasian, Latin, and Middle Eastern. Latinos and Blacks wear more colorful stuff. Political is another. Senators wear suits and red ties. Pins and t-shirts is another. Religion is another with head coverings, only dresses caps or crosses. 6.
