It may seem akward seeing a man dance on another man’s shoulders but this was “Bhangra”. Bhangra is known as a form of self expression through dance. ... Bhangra also included a “Boli” (lyrics). ... As Bhangra first started out there were no rules. Bhangra was done formally at certain events ( fairs, weddings, etc. ... This whole scene adapted to being called what we know now as “Bhangra”. Hindus didn’t like the fact that Bhangra was influencing the whole country into self expression through dance. ... Hindus should rethink that Bhangra has several positive aspects and creates both happiness through self expression and unity. (Singh 235)
Bhangra, as bad as it was viewed, promoted unity between the people in India and served as a good influence on the youth. For instance, Bhangra is done by the students of Punjab University Lahore, Khalsa College Amritsar, DAV College Jalandhar, and Jatt College Ludhiana. Students each day, after long hours of studying, come together and practice Bhangra in order to get better and compete for their college at the annual Bhangra championships.
