Thomas R. Siegler Katrina’s Research Team Due Thursday, October 30th, 2003 Abstract As a member of the research team led by Katrina, I have been assigned to analytically derive the values of m and b in the expression that will minimize the said expression. I have done so using mathematical principles introduced in any Calculus 3 class. I have also included an interpretation of the criterion. 1. Introduction Our research team has been trying to find a model for the data that we have collected. Our data is in the form of ordered pairs , where and where and denote the observed values of the independent and dependent variable respectively. Katrina, our group leader, has determined that a linear form appropriate for modeling the relationship between and is . I derived formulas for and that will minimize the expression . The mathematics involved come directly from any Calculus 3 class. 2. Sum of Squared Errors First, let us define a function as .
