Sitting down with Waterhorse to discuss their origins and influences is something of an interesting and entertaining experience, more so than it normally is with bands anyway (and here I’d have to point out that, in my time, I’ve interviewed some biggies of the British music scene including Asian Dub Foundation and The Charlatans so I know what I’m on about).
To explain; in the first place few bands are so musically proficient – I’d hesitate to say “talented” purely because many bands are talented, but the vast majority don’t have a solid musical background and work ethic to back it up in the way that Waterhorse do, which in itself makes for some interesting listening as various band members become frighteningly in depth about their chosen instruments (and lets face it, any band whose guitarists lug over half a dozen of the things around between them, without the help of roadies, have to be a little obsessive) and, secondly, few bands seem to have such a disparate age range as Waterhorse do, leading to some wildly varying influences.
