Networking Concept • A network consists of two or more computers which are connected to each other by any medium (cable) to enable them to share resources • A group of computers and other devices that are connected together make a network and the concept of computers connected together sharing resources is called networking Shared Resources • Data • Messages • Graphics • Printers • fax machines • modem • other hardware resources Why Network • Organizations implement networks primarily to share resources and enable online communication. • Online communication includes sending messages back and forth or e-mail. Network Terminologies • Servers • Clients • Media • Shared Data • Shared Peripherals • Resources Server: Computers that provide shared resources to network users Clients: Computers that access shared network resources provided by a server Media: The way that computers are connected Shared Data: Files or documents provided by servers across a network Shared Peripherals: Other hardware provided by the network Resources: Anything available as shared item on the network Network Categories • Peer to Peer: In a peer to peer network there is no dedicated server or hierarchy among the computer on the network • Sever Based: A server based network is the one that has a dedicated server and only functions as a server and not used as a client or workstation Peer to Peer Network • All computers are equal and are called peers • Each computer functions as both a client and a server • No one is assigned the job of the administrator • Every one is responsible for his / her data on the system Server Based Network • Has a dedicated server • The dedicated server functions as a server only and not as a client or workstation • Servers are there to fulfill the request made by the clients and workstations • They have to ensure the smooth functioning of the network • Maintain the network security Network Selection Criteria • Organization size • Level of security • Type of business • Level of administrative support • Network traffic • Client / workstation needs • Budget • Where Peer to Peer ? • Few users, normally < 10 • All clients are located within the same geographical area • No security or low level of security • Organization will have a limited growth • Network will not grow rapidly Where Server Based ? • Relatively large number of users • Geographical disparity exists among computer on the network • High level of security • Backup required • Rapid enhancement in technology • Rapid growth of system procedures Specialized Servers • File & Print Servers • Application Servers • Mail Servers • Fax Server • Communication Servers File Vs.
