Commedia dell’ arte basically means artistic comedy. In this time it was a total contradiction to the normal way of making theatre. This all started in the second half of the 16th century and at this time all the plays were classic, stylish, cold and Rigorous. So to get a big reaction the actors decided to go total opposite and be loud and colorful. Free improvisation was used on stage to display this acting technique; however the well trained actors need to follow very precise rules. Popular themes, complex stories with lots of climax, aerobatic jumps and mellow love scenes made this a success. The most successful plots included love and intrigues, disguises and deception.
