The Obituaries… When considering my options for this particular assignment I originally thought my first choice would be the funeral home visit. As the semester progressed, however, and life happened, I thoughtfully reconsidered. Not long ago I lost someone very dear to me to a chronic illness and rehashing up all those emotions over the holidays just didn’t seem like a good idea. So instead I decided to read the obituaries in The Charlotte Observer for a week and honestly I was quite surprised by what I found. When someone dies in America it is customary for family or friends to place a notice of death in the newspaper. This notice is usually quite short. The Observer actually publishes the first seven lines free. Anything more than those seven lines will cost a “minimal” fee. The death notice typically informs the public and other agencies of the death, which funeral home will be making the arrangements, the time of the funeral, and the place or time of the burial. While a death notice simply notifies the public of a person’s passing, an obituary not only notifies the public of the death, but shares personal information about that person as well. This information includes such things as who their family is and what he/she accomplished in their lifetime. If the person is prominent or rich (such as a politician or movie star) a newspaper might also write a short article about them to inform people across America about their death. Both death notices and obituaries are published daily in newspapers and even online. When reading the Obituaries I noticed certain information was typically included. The full name of the deceased was always listed first. In some cases a woman’s maiden name was also shown, as well as aliases and nicknames. Often the place of death was listed (nursing home or hospital) and the geographical location such as the city or state. Then came the date and place of birth.
