The devastation of the Native Americans upon the arrival of the European colonists is due largely in part to the differences in the backgrounds of the two cultures. ... The European colonists, on the other hand, practiced monotheism and would never have conceived of human sacrifice. Because they felt their religion was absurd, colonists wanted to convert the Natives to their religion of Christianity as a way to civilize and tame the Natives. ... Trade was a significant part of both the Native American and the European cultures, while economics was only an obsession of the Europeans. The various Native American tribes traded amongst each other long before the arrival of colonists to America, and later traded with the colonists as well. ... However, the Native Americans did not have the concept of economics that the colonists had. The colonists considered prosperity to be measurable by material wealth (even at the expense of others), a concept unfamiliar to the Natives. ... The Natives, who practiced animism, did not exploit the land and waste its resources as the European colonists did.
