In Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Hamlet, poison is used to demonstrate how vengeance, jealousy and manipulation contribute to the deaths of its main characters. ... When considering the themes of betrayal and vengeance in Hamlet, it is evident that poison, both literal and figurative, ultimately leads to the deaths of Claudius, Laertes, and Hamlet.
Claudius is a strong minded, fundamental character, who is distracted by the possessions of his brother, King Hamlet. Claudius seizes the opportunity to capture King Hamlet’s wife and the thrown by killing him. When the Ghost is talking to Hamlet about the kings death he says “The serpant that did sting thy father’s life. ... The ghost is saying that King Hamlet was poisoned. ... His mind is poisoned by jealousy of his brother King Hamlet. ... This ultimately leads to his death and allows Hamlet and Laertes to avenge themselves. ... Laertes is angered that Hamlet has taken Polonius from him. ... Laertes is not strong willed and is manipulated by the king to participate in a scheme to poison Hamlet.
