In the past, Ethical Egoism has followed closely behind moral philosophy. The principle of Ethical Egoism states that people ought always to do what is in their own self-interest. ... The most obvious argument against Ethical Egoism, namely that it endorses wicked actions is strangely the one philosophers have not paid much attention to. ... And if he could get away with it, wouldn’t Ethical Egoism directly suggest that such actions are permitted? This on its own would seem sufficient to discredit the doctrine all together, however, one might conclude that it begs the question against Ethical Egoism. ... Consequently, some philosophers have tried to illustrate further problems with Ethical Egoism that are more profound and logical. Those who argue for Ethical Egoism would use the following criteria: The argument that altruism is self defeating, Ayn Rand’s argument and Ethical Egoism as compatible with commonsense morality. ... It is expressed that we should practice these policies because in so doing the “betterment of society” may be promoted and achieved - but according to Ethical Egoism, the betterment of society should be of no concern. ... Ethical Egoism is in fact the only philosophy to take the individual’s value seriously.
