The opening of Chinatown Heritage Centre was part of (STB) Singapore Tourism Board’s Chinatown Experience Guide Plan, to revitalize the ethnic district. By preserving memories of the past to complement the new, it would allow Chinatown to retain a linkage to its history. While reminiscing earlier times, the government had hoped to inculcate into Singaporeans a sense of belonging to our homeland, amidst all the bustle of every day’s progress. In addition, it provided an opportunity to educate youth of the hardship our ancestors paid in order to attain the prosperity of today. However, most of the youth only come to know of the centre through school excursions.
