In the article, The Second Generation: Segmented Assimilation and its Variants, Alejandro Portes and Min Zhou explore the hurdles that today's second generation has to face as they try to adapt the American culture. To illustrate the different possible outcomes that arise from dealing with these obstacles, Portes and Zhou introduced the “concept of segmented assimilation.” This concept consists of three possible ways of adjusting to the American culture. One way is to assimilate into the white middle class or a group that is parallel to that class. The second one goes the downward path of the lower ranks of society, which leads to “permanent poverty and assimilation into the underclass.” The last one is advancing economically and preserving their culture and values at the same time.
