Gender Bias in Figure Skating
Webster’s Dictionary describes bias as a verb meaning: to be or to show prejudice. Gender is typically used to describe one sex. (Suplicki, 343) In the field of sports journalism many examples of gender bias can easily be uncovered. Margaret Duncan wrote an article summarizing typical occurrences of gender bias in sports journalism. In her article, “Gender Bias in Televised Sports,” Duncan speaks of her findings. ... ”(Duncan, 1) Duncan also reported that the descriptions of an athlete’s action contained bias, particularly in tennis: “…[W]ords and phrases like ‘bangs in’, ‘ambushed’, ‘explode’, ‘battles’, ‘attack’, ‘firepower’, ‘duel’, ‘shootout’ and so on”, were used to describe men’s action “twice as often” than in women’s. ... Margaret Duncan is correct in her findings; gender bias does exist in sports journalism. Gender bias in sport journalism; in fact, it occurs often and is easily observed. ... Knight displayed bias in journalism by attributing one of Kimberly’s quotes on winning as; “said the pint-sized athlete”(Knight, 1). ... Bias in sport journalism can occur not just in cross-gender reporting but in females reporting on other females and vice versa.
