Prompt 4 and 5 Meursault seems unaffected when he receives the news of his mother’s death. The reader observes from the get go that Meursault is not the average person with traditional emotional responses. Or perhaps, he does not feel or express them in the way that society is accustomed to, and in some ways forces. “Coming through the particular noise coming through the partition, I realized he was crying. For some reason I thought of Maman.” (p. 39) Though Meursault doesn’t mention his feelings or even the slightest emotion, this quote demonstrates his manner of grieving.
