SAIGON(UPI) - A Communist tank todayopened fire on U.S.forcesnear Khe Sanh but it withdrew undera rocket barragefrom a U.S. helicopter gunship. Nearby, U.S. Marines cut downsuicide waves of North Vietnamesetryingto retake a hilltop seized bythe Leathernecks. UPI correspondent Perry Youngsaid the tank had engpged ground units of the 1st Air CavalryDivisionbefore the helicopter chase began. Communist tanks have been sighted several times in Khe Sanharea sin??? theyoverran the LangVei Special Forces outpost Feb. 7, but ground units havebeenunable to take them under fire. APPEARANCEOF the Communistarmor and the sui south of Khe Sanh indicated hard fighting layahead before the hugerelief force links up with the besiegedgarrison. Marine Lt. Gen. Robert Cushman, commander of U.S. Marines in Vietnam,said Wednesday U.S. airpower had "lifted the siege" of Khe Sanh but it was obvious he referred to silencingof the guns which had harassedthe base in the northeastern corner of South Vietnam.
