Justinian was born around 483. ... He was the nephew of the emperor Justin I. Justin later adopted Justinian. Justin’s reign as emperor is sometimes thought of as an extension to Justinian’s because Justinian had some influence over his uncle, even if they disagreed over political issues. When an enemy of the previous emperor is put in charge of the military forces, he is put in a much better position to become emperor than Justinian. This enemy is later brutally murdered and Justinian gains his position with a good place to become emperor. Justinian was rumored to have had a part in his murder. Justinian meets Theodora, an actress and wants to marry her but protest within the family arises. Justinian’s aunt, Justin’s wife, objects to the marriage because of Theodora’s bad actress reputation. ... Justinian married Theodora around 525, even though their religious beliefs were different. Justinian gained the empire in August 527 when Justin died.
Justinian continued an ongoing battle with the Persians in the early years of his reign.
