During a time of great political activity in Italy, Nicollo Machiavelli was born May 3, 1469 in Florence. The son of a jurist, Machiavelli was educated mainly through private study, which included Latin, philosophy, classical studies and ancient history. At the young age of 29 when the ruling regime of Savonarola fell from power in Florence, Machiavelli achieved his first role in political affairs. Without previous administrative background, Machiavelli was appointed to serve as second chancellor of the Florentine Republic under the new government. Many Italian Humanists used their influence to get Machiavelli into office because they felt Florence needed someone who had education in the “human disciplines”. ... Machiavelli’s first mission was to appease Louis XII of France after a disaster in France’s alliance with Pisa, and in doing so, Machiavelli related this problem to his own country’s view of self imortance and realized that because Florence’s government appeared vacillating and weak, they needed a stronger military.
