All parents want to protect their children no matter what, especially from the adult world. But sometimes this love can be inhibitory for the children. Because some day parents must let their children out into the world, so that they can make their own mistakes and choices. In this short story “the bad boy” written in 1988, by Berlie Doherty the overprotected child is not really a child anymore, but a 30-year old, mentally handicapped woman. It must be particularly hard for parents of handicapped children to let go of their children. They are aware that their child is fragile and easily exploitable. But still it is of great importance that the parents give their child a life as happy as possible and they can only do that when they give them a life of their own. The narrator and Geraldine live with their parents in a small town by the sea, where everybody knows each other. They come from a strictly Christian family, the go to mass and have evening prayers. The sisters have a great relationship, even though Geraldine is mentally handicapped and the narrator is quite normal.
