After researching a number of online articles pertaining to public speaking, one article stands out above the rest. Natalia Predtechenskaya summarizes the basics of public speaking, and formulates her thoughts into an easy-to-understand format. According to her article, The Skill of Giving a Presentation, oral presentations are divided into two broad categories, Planning and Presenting. On the surface, these two categories are overtly obvious, but there are many elements that each category encompasses. Most people don’t realize, but the planning process is as critical as the actual presentation. In her article, the author divides the planning and presenting process into five crucial elements for each. The five elements of the planning process that the speaker should consider are Objective, Audience, Contents, Structure, and Rehearsal. Defining the objective is of major importance. Are you trying to persuade, instruct, or entertain your audience? Second, one should analyze the audience that will receive the presentation. Knowing a little about the audience’s background can go a long way.
