James Joyce's Guests of the Nation

The first significant detail in Frank O'Conner's "Guests of the Nation" is within the title itself. The title is ironic because it implies that Hawkins and Belcher are guests of Ireland when in actuality they are hostages of a ware that they and their captors (Bonaparte and Noble) were fighting. The second significant detail is in the second line of the first paragraph, where Belcher says, "Well chums, what about it?" This line in particular implies a nightly ritual, in this case a nightly card game, and also gives the impression that the line between captor and captive has blurred and given way to friendship.
