Good News About Injustice
“This book is a simple introduction to three things: the injustice of our world, the character of our God, and the opportunity for God’s people to make a difference.”
The injustice that occurs in this world is something that many of us do not understand. It is something that we see on the news, think about how bad the injustice is, and then move on with our daily lives completely forgetting what we have just seen. ... Haugen takes the injustice in this world and portrays to us the reality of what actually happens. ... Haugen then takes our response to the injustice and gives us a realistic method of dealing with it so that we can act on the response which God has called us to have. In the first section of Haugen’s book, he attempts to show us how real injustice is. ... Haugen shows us the reality of injustice by describing an example of injustice in the world, and then describing how much God hates it. ...
Haugen portrays the reality of injustice through a story about the visit he made to the site of a Rwandan genocide where thousands of Tutsi’s were beaten and hacked to death by Hutu loyalists. ... Another reason we do not sympathize with the injustices that occur in the world, is because we believe them to be so out of control that there is nothing we can do about it and thus, we dismiss them from our thoughts. ... ”
As a result of God’s desire for us to fight against injustice Haugen says we need to do two things to get us thoroughly involved in God’s plan. ... Once we have reached that point, which I believe takes either a real experience with injustice or someone who can really “walk in someone else’s shoes,” we can then prepare our minds by “looking at them through God’s eyes, that is, through His Word. ... 38) In other words, the second step means that we need to understand that God knows we live in a fallen world and He desires that we help turn it around “You are the light of the world…Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).) This turning about of the world, however, will not necessarily come all at once it will probably occur as the ripples of a dropped stone do in water, getting larger and larger little by little especially as more and more little ripples are formed and join together.
Haugen, in his third chapter, gives several examples of how little ripples (ordinary people) can make a difference in this world of great injustice. ...
Thus far, we have seen that injustice does exist, that we need to respond to it, what we need to do to begin responding, and how God has created this world so that if we (as individuals) do as He calls us His will shall be done. ... Thus, we shall discuss God’s hatred for injustice and his love for justice and how these and three other specific attributes of God encourage us to deal with the issue of injustice.
