Music Essay: Profile a Musician or a Musical Group If music be the food of love, play on! Assignment: Write an essay of 3.5 to 5 pages explaining the philosophy and critical reaction to a contemporary musician/performer or music group. You are not restricted to any particular type of music; however, the group/performer must still be active. Use the essays in The World Is a Text to serve as models for the tone or stance of the writer and topics. (See “Additional Writing Tips” below for specific suggestions.) Sources: Find two articles about your performer or group and use the articles in your essay to whatever extent you find them helpful. Summarize, paraphrase, or quote any part of the articles as you see fit. The sources are going to help you give a balanced view of popular reception. You should also have copies of some of the song lyrics. When you use a source, you must state who the writer is and what magazine, book, or Web site the source material is from. Follow the MLA guidelines for parenthetical documentation and works cited page found in your reference book. Thesis: What philosophy of life or art does the performer project through her or his performance style, choices of instruments, and song lyrics, and how has the public or press responded? Or, focus more of the essay on the song lyrics and try to explain the themes and values of the lyrics.
