The novel, The Power of One, follows a boy named Peekay through a life long journey to becoming the welterweight boxing champion of the world. Peekay and Doc have a resilient relationship that builds stronger as time passes since they meet in Barberton. Peekay is in the hills of Barberton sitting on a rock, out of nowhere a tall, skinny man introduces himself to Peekay. This is where the foundation of Peekay and Doc’s relationship begins. When Peekay decides to skip school, Doc tells him that it is time to show who you really are and stop hiding. As the time passes Peekay and Doc get closer and closer and trust starts to build. Peekay, in his earlier life has came into contact with bad news about Germans but when Peekay finds out that Doc is a German he doesn’t let his past take interfere with their relationship. Doc, being a wise man, teaches Peekay about music and plants, or things Peekay didn’t know about but had an interest in.
